Open Course Ware for UdeG

Instead of having different course materials dispersed on the internet, it would be great to have a platform administered by the University where all the professors can put their materials and have them available for other people to see them.

Proposal:

We would suggest that the University become a member of the OCW consortium, and encourage professors to prepare their materials according to the OCW framework.

Rationale:

Each educator can create their content and use different technologies to put their materials in the open, however, instead of have all materials disperse on different platforms, this will allow people to find all course materias available on one site.

Implementation:

It would be necessary to have IT support, administrative support, and perhaps use the help of students to create materials and maintenance.

Challenges:

There is the fact, that the University needs to host the platform, budgetary restraints, and skilled personnel.

Is it truly established that the location of where materials are stored in an instructional problem? Any single system that aims to be one location for all content often results in limiting the features and possibilities for the tools. The basic premise of the internet was that a distributed system, like the human nervous system, is more durable than a single entity.

This could be huge undertaking of management and maintenance; what would be the gains of making everyone use the same framework and platform in light of the costs of managing such a system? You need to make a strong case for what is gained at a cost of standardization.
