The wikis help the students to the appropriation of the content considering their own capacity and effort; as well as sharing it in a global and collaborative way.
I consider it a good didactic learning strategy.

Creo que la experiencia nos da muchas cuestiones para reflexionar acerca de las herramientas que utilizamos en nuestra práctica docente.
Primeramente, los wikis, por una parte se podría pensar que son una herramienta obsoleta, por otra que no es confiable, pero sigue siendo una excelente opción para recabar y compartir información en muchas instituciones.
Como producción en el área académica, es necesario considerar muchos factores, como los objetivos de aprendizaje, los conocimientos a desarrollar y la correcta fundamentación por parte de los estudiantes y que comprendan el sentido de colaboración.

It was fun to listen to a professor that changed his vision of the very same resource: I think that many of the teachers that hate the possibility of use Wikipedia in the Universidad de Guadalajara can change too, and become users and contributors of the greatest enciclopedia of the world’s history.

Diego Ramos: Wikis are a tool that allows to develop the user-student as a creator, or at least move from his passive state to become a prosumer. From something that passionate you how to create a wiki about your favorite series or even provide data related to the scientific field. The best thing is that it is open and promotes collective intelligence.

After hearing about Jon experience, I realized I didn’t know much about Wikipedia. The exploring session also helped out.
After some time doing research and reading articles, I came up with some ideas for the courses I teach. Wrote them down and see if I can put them in practice soon. For example, I found some gaps on fire ecology in Spanish. It would be interesting to contribute as students, to construct a type of glossary on the fire ecology subject…perhaps students will be more interested in homework and learning if they have the stimulus of sharing with the academia, managers, and others their knowledge.

We as academics, must be realistics about the fact that wikipedia is the most popular iinformation source between our students… so, we must do something about it.

Jon comentaba que cuando inició con el uso de Wikipedia desconfiaba de los contenidos y que ahora sigue desconfiando, sin embargo, en la medida en que todos colaboremos enriqueciendo el sitio y mejorando los contenidos existentes se irá fortaleciendo y los contenidos serán confiables.
Mi percepción de Wikipedia es que puede ser un referente apropiado dependiendo del tipo y propósito de los trabajos o escritos que estemos generando.

After Jon and the first day I think that Wikipedia iis a good experience because is a good tool for students and teachers that can create and recreate knowledge.
Wikipedia could be the first step to get information but has to be evaluated before used as a good reference.
We will always have thinks to do in wikipedia (créate,edition, evaluation, etc.).

Wikipedia is a great tool but its use must be accompanied by common sense. There are sensitive issues in which opinions are divided into two irreconcilables groups; and what you observe is a war of editions in wikipedia, in those cases when common sense and prudence have to save the situation.

The conversation of Jon Beasley-Murrey was very interesting, I talk about things I had not thought about how to work with students to accelerate their skills as researchers, however, I am very impressed that you have said that Wikipedia is not an platform for the debate. For the formation of the career in which I work (Philosophy) the debate is the core part of the training. I understand that Wikipedia is a tool for consultation and not dialogical, but could that part also be opened for discussion in Wikipedia?

The fact that he said he is still skeptical about Wikipedia is something I relate to. While you can find very good info on the platform, you can also find a lot of misleading information, and something very important is to teach the students to distinguish when you reliable sources and how to improve the information.

Initially wikipedia was created to share articles created by users and its creators did not think that in the future they would have problems with the reliability of the information, perhaps because it is thought that a wiki can not have scientific quality and as a result of this situation has generated a impressive amount of work intended to correct and edit the articles that are already in wikipedia.
I think eventually the information will be corrected based on the rules of wikipedia but still take longer to get rid of the bad impressions that caused at the beginning.
Maybe we just have to let it grow and mature like any edible fruit .. 🙂

Thanks to the conference with Jon Beasley-Murray I understood that wikipedia can be seen with skepticism when you only know the points that you need to work, but that the benefits are that you can leave valuable contributions that contribute to the generation of knowledge. Now I look at this tool as the opportunity for our students to be active participants who leave their mark.

I think Wikipedia it’s a good tool to collaborative work, but it needs to continue evolving to be considered a totally reliable research tool.
Searching the web I found an interesting fact that highlights the gender gap that exists in Wikipedia, since currently only 13% of the editors are women. This has result in a proposal called wikimujeres, led by a group of women Wikipedia users concerned about the diversity and neutrality of the contents that are published.

I think is a good idea to work in wikipedia. Students could see it as a contribution to our city, country or world. It’s a colaborative work. Altought sometimes they would want to see their names in things they made.
